All registrations (for both studios and independent entries) for our Virtual Event are to be completed through DanceBug (www.dancebug.com).

All deadlines are subject to change based on government restrictions and protocols. Star Beat Dance Champions would like allocate studios and their dancers ample time for routines to be rehearsed and recorded safely.
*We are prepared to host multiple events based on entries.
VIDEO SUBMISSION IMPORTANT INFORMATION
All video submissions must be uploaded via DanceBug using a .MP4 format (preferred), but .MOV files are also acceptable. In studio, home/outdoor recordings will be accepted as well as videos that may have been submitted to other virtual dance competitions. Please be sure that all videos are recorded in landscape orientation. 2020/2021 dance season routines will only be accepted. Should you require assistance in submitting videos to DanceBug, please contact us at contact@starbeatdance.com.
REFUND POLICY
Please note that entries are accepted on a first come first served basis and will only be confirmed as part of our virtual competition once payment has been received. If payment is not received 2 weeks prior to the airing date, studios will be subject to a late fee. In the unlikely event that Star Beat Dance champions is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, all virtual entry fees will be refunded.

Age Divisions
All ages are as of December 31st, of the previous calendar year. Full name, age and date of birth of all performers must be accurate and true. Contestants must be able to provide proof of age by birth certificate at competition if requested. If proof of age is requested and not provided, the routine will be disqualified, and no refund will be issued.
To determine ages for Duets, Trios, Groups and Lines, add up all ages of performers in the routine. Divide total by the number of performers in the routine.
If the result ends in a decimal, drop the decimal.
Classifications
A novice contestant is a person who has never competed before in a competition. A Novice Soloist/Duet/Trio may have competed before in a Group or line, but never in any number with less than 4 dancers. A Novice Group/Line must consist of 75% novice dancers, who have never competed before. A new dance form performed by an experienced soloist, Duet/Trio, Group or Line is NOT Novice. A Novice dancer is classified Novice throughout the entire season. The maximum age for Novice is 16 years. There must be a minimum of 3 entries in each category in order to have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placement ribbon. Separate overalls will be awarded for this category. Novice entries are not eligible for Highest Score of the Day.
- Solos: A dancer that has never competed previously in a solo in any dance style.
- Duet/Trio: 100% of the dancers have never competed in a solo/duet/trio in any dance style.
- Groups: Dancers must be 75% Novice.
The Pre-Competitive category is for dancers who train 6 hours or less a week. This includes all rehearsal time. All participants of a Solo/Duet/Trio/ dancing in the Pre-Competitive category should have NO more than 6 hours of training per week. Dancers in a group/line must be 75% Pre-Competitive.
A Pre-Competitive Duet/Trio/Group/Line dancer may dance in the Competitive division, therefore a Pre-Competitive dancer may choose to dance in a Competitive Duet/Trio/Group/Line but would still be considered Pre-Competitive for their solo etc., as long as they only dance 6 hours or less. Any competitive dancer dancing in the Pre-Competitive divisions may result in disqualification to the routine. The maximum age for Pre-Competitive is 21 years old, any age exceeding will be placed in the Adult or Professional Category. There must be a minimum of 3 entries in each category in order to have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placement ribbon. Separate overalls will be awarded for this category. Pre-Competitive entries are not eligible for Highest Score of the Day.
*Star Beat will acknowledge the Pre-Competitive categories for highest score of the day if there is no competitive dancing on a specific day.
Dancer(s) who train more than 6 hours a week; including all choreography/rehearsal time. Dancers must be under the age of 21 and not employed by any industry professional pertaining to dance. The maximum age for Competitive is 21 years old. Any age exceeding will be placed in the Adult or Professional Category. There must be a minimum of 3 entries in each category in order to have a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placement ribbon.
Any dancer 19 years or older that receives financial compensation or gain from instructing, choreographing and/or performing in the dance industry is considered a Professional Dancer.
- Any Duet with a Professional dancer would be classified as a Professional Category
- Any Trio with a Professional dancer would be classified as a Professional Category
- Any Group with 25% or more Professional dancers would be classified as a Professional Category.
Discipline
A routine using controlled moves consisting of acrobatic tricks such as walkovers, limbers, handstands, handsprings, chest rolls, illusions, etc. The routine must contain dance moves, steps and choreography.
A routine that is interpretive using a contemporary style of dance, modern dance technique and movement with no limitation, while incorporating balance, control and extensions. Illusions, front and back rolls are allowed, as well as partner lifts that may end up with partner’s feet over their heads. One acrobatic trick allowed.
A routine consisting of jazz technique using body isolations and varied rhythmic accents. The routine can contain a maximum of two (2) acrobatic tricks. Cartwheels, Illusions, front and back rolls are allowed, as well as partner lifts that may end up with partner’s feet over their heads.
A routine consisting primarily of classical pointe technique, using classical music and pointe shoes. One acrobatic trick allowed.
A routine consisting primarily of vocals.
A routine containing partner work and/or overhead lifts.
Routine using ethnic style of dance, such as Highland, Celtic, Irish Jig, etc.
A routine that tells the story of the music while demonstrating passion, emotion, balance, technique, extension and control. Illusions, front and back rolls are allowed, as well as partner lifts that may end up with partner’s feet over their heads. One Acrobatic trick allowed.
A routine, with a minimum of twelve (12) dancers, incorporating any form of dance with a theme or story which is portrayed throughout the dance using formations and/or rhythm changes. Acrobatic tricks are permitted. Please notify if routine exceed 10 minutes.
A routine expressing a form of classical dance containing ballet technique while incorporating classical movements such as grace and precision. Ballet slippers only. One acrobatic trick allowed.
A routine that uses street dance styles with popular, mainstream music. Styles associated with hip hop include breakdance, popping and locking and krumping.
A routine that combines Broadway, movie musical song and/or spoken dialogue and dance. It must portray the feeling of the lyrics and music through the use of any form of dance. Lip-Synching is permitted.
A routine containing an equal combination of both singing and any form of dancing. Fifty percent of performance should consist of dance. Accompaniment must be on pre-recorded back track.
A routine which portrays a recognizable character throughout and include classical steps and movements with the use of props. Can be performed in any form of dance. One acrobatic trick allowed.
Dance improvisation is the process of spontaneously creating movement.
Prior to the IMPROV category, each dancer will be given 10 seconds to listen to a song selected at random. They will then get 40 seconds to perform their piece and to interpret the music to which ever dance style they wish. Dancers will be dancing in random selected order. Please listen for announcements and updates throughout the weekend.
This category will receive live adjudication and will be adjudicated in two divisions – 12 & under and 13 & over. Please note that the IMPROV category is not eligible for overall awards.
Awards for the IMRPOV category will be determined upon registration.
A routine that does not fall under any other dance category, and/or is a combination of two or more dance styles. A maximum of six (6) Acro tricks allowed. If the routine consists of six (6) or more acrobatic tricks, you must move these routines to the Acro category. *a gymnastic line of 3 tricks is considered 3 of your tricks for that routine.*
A routine consisting primarily of tap techniques. Pre-recorded tap sounds cannot be present in the piece of music being used. One acrobatic trick allowed. Illusions, front and back rolls are allowed, as well as partner lifts that may end up with partner’s feet over their heads.
Starbeat Policies
Scoring System
Star Beat is known for its fair and unbiased marking system.
Dance routines competing at Star Beat will be judged by a panel of (3) three professional judges who will award each routine a score out of 100 marks, following the Star Beat scoring system.
The 3 marks will then be averaged to achieve a final mark out of 100 points for each performance. Results can produce multiples of All-Star Beat Platinum, Platinum, Diamond, Gold, or Silver awards for each competitor within each category.
Category Awards
Star Beat understands the importance of walking away feeling rewarded and recognized for hard work and dedication. At Star Beat no dancer is left unrecognized, EVERY dancer is a STAR!
- All participating Soloists, Duets, and Trios will be awarded a custom designed Star Beat Medallion & Lanyard based on the scoring categories of All-Star Beat Platinum, Platinum, Diamond, Gold, or Silver.
- All participating dancers in Small/Large Groups, Extended Lines and Productions will be awarded a placement ribbon based on the scoring categories of All-Star Beat Platinum, Platinum, Diamond, Gold, or Silver.
First, Second and Third placements will be recognized in categories that consist of THREE or more entries. In the event of a single entry in a category, the entry will be announced and recognized following the Star Beat scoring system. If a tie arises in a regular category, both entries will receive the same award and placement. Soloists will be separated into Divisions on the occasion that 11 or more soloists fall into one particular category. Your studio will receive Video Judge (a collection of all of your entries and their corresponding judges’ comments) available online.
Special Adjudicator's Choice Awards
Special Awards will be awarded throughout the competition AT EVERY ADJUDICATION by our panel of judges. Special awards are awarded based on stage presence, choreography, uniqueness, costume and overall performance rather than by score. Star Beat will also be recognizing choreographers at each adjudication session. Judges will select one routine during each session that they feel demonstrated creativity, uniqueness, choreography, costumes and overall package.
Overall Awards
All Overall High Score ties will be broken and decided by the panel of judges.
An overall solo by age winner will only be placed once (in their true age category) in the top 5, no same contestants can place 1st and 2nd, 3rd 4th and/or 5th. If less than 5 solos are entered in any one age category, we reserve the right to combine an overall age category.

Numerous Scholarships will be awarded throughout the competition & determined by the panel of judges. Award recipients will also receive a customized PDF certificate.

THE FINE PRINT
- STAR BEAT RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ADD/CHANGE/COMBINE ANY OVERALL CATEGORIES/CASH AWARDS BASED ON REGISTRATION, AT ITS DISCRETION.
- Each dancer may only be competitive from one studio
- Star Beat Dance Champions reserves the right to add/subtract days to the virtual competition based on the number of entries received.
- Costumes, hair and makeup will not be critiqued or impact scoring in any way. There will be no deductions for dancers wearing masks.
- Star Beat is not responsible for personal injury to dancers or any person(s) in attendance occurring during the taping of submitted video routines.
- Videos from previous competitions will be accepted as long as they were filmed within the 2020/2021 dance season.
- Upon registration, you are certifying that routines have not been performed in previous competition seasons. Only routines prepared for the 2020 and or 2021 competitive season may be submitted. By registering for our competition, you are confirming that routines have not be performed in prior seasons (2019 or prior).
- Star Beat will provide detailed summary reports, which includes judge scores for all their studio performances, overall awards received, and prizes. This will be emailed or mailed to Studio Directors or a designated representative upon the completion of the aired dance competition. *Please ensure your current email address/information is added to your DanceBug account upon registration.*
- Star Beat reserves the right to make any necessary changes

- All entries registered for Star Beat Dance Champions virtual dance competition will qualify for all Star Beat Overall Awards. *this rule will apply for our virtual competitions only
- There must be a minimum of 3 entries per Overall category for Overall Prize Awards. If an Overall category (excluding overall solos by age) has less than 3 entries and receives an All-Star Beat Platinum placement, that entry will receive an Overall Award. Overall Production will be awarded with a minimum of 2 or more productions. Overall categories are subject to change at any time during and/or per Star Beat event.
- Upon entering Star Beat Dance Champions Inc., in person/ virtual event, parents, dancers, dance teachers/instructors and studio directors authorize permission given by an individual to Star Beat Dance Champions Inc. for the use of their name, photographs, videos, and/or interviews statements for publication on any electronic media use including promotional materials at present or future Star Beat Dance Champions Inc. events. This consent comes without compensation.
